A Sea Monster in Our Midst — Reflections on "Bobo" and the Old Man of Monterey Bay with Tim Thomas and Geoffrey Dunn, Ph.D

Curious about Monterey history?  Join us for a lively discussion each month with local Historian Tim Thomas as we explore Monterey’s rich historic past.  

Nothing says Christmas like sea Monsters!  Dunn will explore the myths and legends of the Old Man of Monterey Bay from a personal perspective. As a fourth-generation member of the Santa Cruz Italian fishing colony, he grew up with stories about the Old Man and sea monsters in his youth. 

* Geoffrey Dunn, Ph. D., is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and historian and has written extensively about California culture and history. He is the author of several books, including Santa Cruz Is in the Heart (Volumes I and II); The Santa Cruz Wharf: Images of AmericaChinatown Dreams: The Life and Photography of George Lee;  and The Lies of Sarah Palin. His films include Dollar a Day, 10¢ a Dance: A Historic Portrait of Filipino Farm Workers in AmericaChinese Gold: The Chinese of the Monterey Bay Region;Calypso Dreams, and The Glamour Boyz Again. He also served as the on-screen narrator of A Day on the Bay: Portrait of a Ligurian Fishing Colony. Dunn has been writing about Monterey Bay's maritime history for more than four decades.

 

This program takes place on Zoom, or participants may join by phone. Registration closes an hour before the program. The Zoom access information will be sent to registered participants shortly before the program begins. Use of video camera and level of participation is determined by each person.
