Open Mic: Shaping Peace Together

Open Mic: Shaping Peace Together

Share your music, poetry, storytelling, art, film, favorite quotes, or other artistry at a unique and uplifting afternoon that weaves together our community's creativity with interspersed opportunities to connect in meaningful conversation in recognition of the United Nation's International Day of Peace. Although the theme is Shaping Peace Together, your share does not need to be about peace.

Whether you're new to sharing, a seasoned performer, or an audience member using Zoom for the first time, this community share is designed to bring people together in a friendly, kind, and supportive environment. We warmly welcome you! Our guest emcee Tyller Williamson will ask for volunteers to share throughout the program. Each person will have up to approximately 5 minutes. We especially encourage anyone who is a little nervous to take this opportunity. We're here to support you!

This is a family-friendly, all-ages program. Adults, teens, and kids are welcome to share. As such, plan your share accordingly. Thank you! Participant microphones will be muted during shares. Breakout rooms may be used for smaller group discussions, however each person will decide the extent of their participation. You're welcome to just listen. This program will not be recorded and you're welcome to stay as little or as long as you like.

To inquire about sharing film clips, please email libraryinfo(at)monterey.org.

In recognition of the United Nation's 75th anniversary, the United Nations International Day of Peace 2020 theme is Shaping Peace Together. "Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

As we struggle to defeat COVID-19, your voice is more important than ever. In these difficult times of physical distancing, this International Day of Peace will be dedicated to fostering dialogue and collecting ideas. The world will be invited to unite and share thoughts on how to weather this storm, heal our planet and change it for the better. Even though we may not be able to stand next to each other, we can still dream together.

Celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred. Join us so that we can shape peace together."
