Ohlone master basketweaver Linda Yamane and apprentice Violet Smith, both members of the Rumsen Ohlone Tribal Community, share the processes and intricacies of traditional Ohlone basket making. Drop by any time between 1-3pm, watch them weave, ask questions, and leave with a new appreciation for this remarkable art form that has been practiced in Monterey for thousands of years.

This event will take place at Colton Hall.

Registration is not required, but appreciated.

 

Bios:

Linda Yamane has been researching and revitalizing traditional Rumsen Ohlone practices and technologies for nearly forty years. She is also an artist who uses these skills to depict the beauty of Ohlone culture.

Violet Smith reflects her Ohlone heritage not only in her personal life, but also through her job as a California State Parks Interpreter in the Monterey District, where she specializes in indigenous programs.
