The Real Ambassadors: Dave & Iola Brubeck + Louis Armstrong Challenge Segregation

Keith Hatschek, Professor Emeritus, University of the Pacific, shares the story of three determined artists: Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, and Iola Brubeck, who took the stage at the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival to make history with their ground-breaking jazz musical, The Real Ambassadors. First conceived in 1956, the musical's journey to the stage for its premiere takes extraordinary twists and turns across the backdrop of the civil right movement. A variety of colorful characters, from Broadway impresarios to gang-connected managers, surface in the riveting story.
