Learning about Whales by Listening to Them

Learning about Whales by Listening to Them

In the vast ocean, whales use sound to communicate, socialize, forage, navigate, reproduce, and transmit culture.  In this event we'll take a deep dive into the ocean's world of sound:

* Immersing in the powerful sounds of whales living right here in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

* Exploring exciting scientific discoveries enabled by listening to whales.

* Learning about a wonderful local annual event dedicated to whales: Whalefest Monterey!

Dr. John Ryan is a biological oceanographer with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where his team works to understand the complex ecology of marine mammals so that we can better protect them.
